- Celebrate on the lunar tithi mainly. Optionally you can do on the gregorian date also if you like. But do not skip the Lunar Tithi.
- Start the day with a short meditation and thank Bhagavan.
- Light a kritajnata-deepa or a gratitude lamp for each year, in your pooja room or a temple.
- Definitely visit your ishta devata’s temple and do a pooja in the temple or your pooja room. If possible, with family. Recite stotrams, vishnu-sahasranama or Bhagavad Geeta chapters/verses or any vedic mantras.
- Do minimum 1 mala of Japa of your ishta-mantra
- Bow down to parents/elders & teachers and seek their blessings.
- Remember the 8 Chiranjeevis while chanting this shloka and bow to them mentally:
अश्वत्थामा बलिर्व्यासो हनूमांश्च विभीषणः ।
कृपश्च परशुरामश्च सप्तैते चिरजीविनः ॥
सप्तैतान् संस्मरेन्नित्यं मार्कण्डेयमथाष्टमम् ।
जीवेद्वर्षशतं सोपि सर्वव्याधिविवर्जितः ॥
Transliteration / meaning:
Ashvatthāma balivyāso hanūmānś cha vibhīṣaṇaḥ |
Kṛpaś cha parashurāmaś cha saptaite chiranjeevinaḥ ||
Saptaitan saṃsmarennityam mārkaṇḍeyam athāshtamam |
Jīved varṣaśataṃ sopi sarvavyādhivivarjitaḥ ||
Meaning: “Ashvatthāma, Bali, Vyāsa, Hanumān, Vibhīṣaṇa, Kṛpa and Parashurāma — these seven are the long-lived (immortals). One should daily remember these seven, and also Markandeya as the eighth; then one lives for a hundred years, free from all diseases.
8. Based on the understanding of pancha rnas or 5 debts that we have towards devatas, pirtrus, rishis, manushyas and Bhutas or living beings, do the following. Offer arghya to Surya. Each time chant Gayatri Mantra and offer the water to Surya Deva. 5 for Devatas. 5 for your family and pirtus because of whom you are here. 5 for the Great Rishis and your teachers/gurus. 5 for all humans who have helped you. 5 for all the living beings in the universe.
9. Our culture says Yajna, dana and tapa should be done always. You can do or get someone to do an Ayushya homa for your healthy and happy life. Attend it with your family, friends etc. They can offer ahutis praying for you and they will also get the punya and benefit of remembering Bhagavan and expressing their love for you. You will be instrumental in making them do a spiritual sadhana.
10. Do Annadaan for poor people / orphans or find a noble cause that resonates with you and donate to that organisation.
11. Plant a sapling and take care of it or arrange for it to be taken care of.
12. Take up one tapas or austerity for the year that helps you in attaining self-mastery & connects you with the Divine.

14. Avoid cutting a cake and blowing out candles. Its not good healthwise. Light lamps and distribute Indian sweets instead.
15. Make a list of 5 things you want to accomplish this year in priority order and start working on it.
16. Seek forgiveness from Bhagavan for any errors of omission or commission done in the last year.
17. Forgive anyone who has hurt you in the last 1 year and free yourself.
18. End the day with gratitude and prayer for wellbeing of all.
