Hanuman Jayanti or Janmotsava?

In Indian tradition, the word " Jayanti "  is widely used  to commemorate the birth anniversaries of great men and gods  . From time to time, the misconception has been spread that the word " Jayanti "  should only be used for great men who have passed away. However , Sanskrit grammar ,  Puranic literature ,  divine tradition, and astrology — all together prove this notion to be completely baseless.

In fact, " Jayanti "  is a highly civilized ,  classical, and auspicious word ,  referring not to the state of being alive or dead ,  but to a moment of triumphant ,  virtuous, and divine manifestation . And in this sense , the term " Hanuman Jayanti "  is most appropriate ,  proven, and meaningful for the birth of Hanuman  .

1.  Grammar and Etymology:  Literal meaning of ' Jayanti '

Etymology of the word ' Jayanti ' is, that time –

  • The one who gives victory
  • Cultivate virtue ,
  • And make the world prosperous through the appearance of some divine personality.

Thus,  " Jayanti "  is the name of the period of victory . This fact alone proves that Jayanti  has no connection with the " dead/alive "  state .

2.  Meaning of Jayanti in Puranas

The Puranas say:

“ Jay Punyaanch Kurute Jayantim iti Taan Viduh ”

That is, the time which gives birth to both victory and virtue is called Jayanti .

From this it is clear that Jayanti is not just a birthday ,  but the name of a moment filled with virtue ,  victory and divinity .

3. ' Jayanta '  and  ' Jayanti ' - the man of victory and the time of victory

Classical explanation:

“ Atishayenaarin Jayate Jayheturiti Va Jayantah. ”

One who defeats even the most powerful enemies is called Jayanta . The moment when this  " Jayanta "  appears is called Jayanti .

In the Puranas , the word Jayanti is used in the context of Vishnu ,  Shiva ,  Upendra and Devi :

  •  Name of  Vishnu : Jayant  – “ Arko Vajasanah …  Jayanth Sarvvijayee. ”
  •  Name of  Shiva : Jayant  – “ Savitrasch Jayantsch …” ( Matsyapuran  5.30)
  • Name of Upendra  ( Vaman):  Jayant  – “ Jayanto Vasudevansh …”
  • Name of Goddess  :  Jayanti  – “ Jayanti Mangala …”

Therefore, Jayanti is a universally accepted designation of the divine ,  victorious birth period.

4.  The birth of Krishna  is also called ' Jayanti '  .

The time of birth of Shri Krishna himself has been described in the scriptures as –

“ Jayanti naam sa prokta sarvapaapranashini. ”

This evidence shows that when the birth time of any incarnation is blessed with divine coincidence ,  then it  is called “ Jayanti ”  .

5.  Astrological evidence:  ' Jayanta Yoga '

According to astrology:

**“ Yatra Svochchagataschandro Lagnadekadashe situated.

Jayantho naam yogoyam enemy destroyer ,

This yoga, formed by a special combination of exalted planets, is considered destructive ,  victorious, and conducive to divine manifestation . Because this yoga was described at the birth of many incarnations, their birthdays  were called " Jayanti . "

6.  Jayanti and Hanuman: Philosophical ,  Classical and Emotional Connection

If we apply all the definitions and classical principles of ' Jayanti '  that have emerged till now  to Hanumanji
,  then it becomes clear that -

The word ' Jayanti '  is most appropriate ,  proven and authentic for the birth of Hanuman  .

Why ?

(a)  Hanumanji himself  is a ' Jayanta Purush '

  • sea crossing
  • victory over Lanka
  • demon-destruction
  • attainment of life-giving power
  • accomplishment of Ramkarya

These are all acts of supreme victory – and the scripture says  “ atishayenaarīn jayate – saḥ jayantaḥ. ”

Therefore, the birth moment of a man whose entire life  is “ victory ”  should be called Jayanti .

(b)  Appearance of Hanuman = Appearance of the power of victory in the world

The origin of the word Jayanti  is “ Jayatiti ”  meaning  “ the time of giving victory. ”
Result of Hanuman’s birth:

  • The Ramayana became possible
  • The victory of religion became possible
  • Creatures were freed from fear
  • The power of Ramnaam manifested on earth

With his appearance, an era of victory for the righteous began. This is the literal meaning of Jayanti.

(c)  Hanuman: Vishnu – Bhakti and Shivansh – coordination of both the  ' joy-oriented '  elements.

The Puranas show –

  • Vishnu is also known as  Jayant.
  • Shiva is also known as  Jayant.
  • Goddess name  Jayanti
  • Vamana's name  is Jayant

Hanuman , despite being a part of Shiva, is a devotee of Vishnu. Therefore, he  is the embodiment of both elements of " Jai "  —valor and devotion . Therefore, the divine moment of his appearance is meaningfully called Jayanti .

(d)  Hanuman's birth: the time of the destroyer of sins and the destroyer of enemies

Like Krishna Jayanti –

  • The birth of Hanumanji also symbolizes the destruction of fear ,  obstacles and sins.
  • He is an “ eternally free ,  auspicious and auspicious ”  element from birth  .
  • His appearance itself  is the emergence of purity ,  strength ,  devotion and victory .

Hence that time  is called “ Jayanti ”  – not just a celebration .

(e) ' Janamotsav '  is merely a celebration ;  but  ' Jayanti '  is the name of a divine manifestation.

" Janamotsav " =  social ,  cultural celebration.
" Jayanti " =  triumphant moment of manifestation of divine power .

Hanuman's birth is not just a birth –
it is the moment when –

  • Service descended
  • The might descended
  • Wisdom and wisdom descended
  • The highest ideal of devotion was revealed
  • The divine power necessary for the work of Rama appeared.

Therefore,  the word “ Hanuman-Jayanti ”  is proved by all three – meaning ,  principle and scripture .

7.  Conclusion: Why  ' Hanuman Jayanti '  is the classical usage

All the evidence taken together shows that –

✓  ' Jayanti '  is the name of the victorious ,  virtuous and  divine moment of birth.

✓ It  has nothing to do with ' living/dead '  .

✓ The scriptures use the word ' Jayanti '  on the birth of gods ,  incarnations and  victorious men  .

so -

' Hanuman Jayanti '  is the completely scriptural ,  appropriate ,  authentic and essential name -  not'Hanuman Janmotsav'
